The Pier House

Salmon BLT

Cape May is the dining capital of New Jersey for a reason. There are numerous restaurants to choose from, so each one has to do something special to attract new patrons. Many serve farm to table or offer fresh caught seafood. Others have large menus for those who have dietary restrictions such as gluten or dairy-free, and others have a small select menu to cater to those with a fine dining palate. The question is what keeps me coming back to the Pier House? The answer? Their Salmon BLT.

BK Brunch

Shrimp Po’ Boy

Fish sandwiches have become part of many restaurants’ seasonal menus. Many look forward to devouring their first fish sandwich of the year, even if they are not Catholic. Different restaurants and fast-food joints compete for the top fish sandwich of the year always trying to out do the previous years sandwich. To me, most fast-food sandwiches taste the same – deep fried and salty. You can not taste the fish, and the buns are usually mediocre and soggy at best. That is why I choose to try local restaurants around me instead.

O’Connor’s American Bar & Grille

O’Connor’s Fish Sandwich

I wanted to make my final Lenten meal something special. After much discussion I decided that O’Connor’s would be the winner. I have eaten there once previously, and it was fine. A few weeks ago, at the beginning of Lent my parents went there for lunch one day and they raved about how good their crab cake sandwich was. I knew I had to go back and try their fish sandwich and I am so happy I did! It did not disappoint.

Kitchen87

Flounder Fish Sandwich

I love trying new restaurants for the first time. I have had Kitchen87 on my bucket list to try for a few years now. I have heard such good things about them, and everyone raves about their delicious English muffins, but they are a strict breakfast and lunch shop. So, when I began doing my Friday Fish Fry blog series, I knew I wanted to hit them up!

The Pop Shop

Fried Shrimp Wrap

I first discovered the Pop Shop in Medford about 5 years ago. My friend was visiting, and she enjoys the vegan lifestyle. Personally, I say I don not discriminate against any kind of food. So, when she visits, I always try to find a vegan friendly restaurant to try and that morning the challenge was breakfast. It is difficult trying to find a restaurant that serves something other than a fruit bowl for a vegan, but the Pop Shop does not see food that way. They have tofu scrambles, vegan pancakes, and multiple other items on their menu to choose from. Needless to say, it was a success.

Dunleavy’s

Drunken Irish Fisherman Sandwich

Dunleavy’s in Hainesport, New Jersey, is a longtime advertiser in some of our church bulletins. They are a restaurant that has been around for decades and is a family favorite. This is the restaurant that I always take friends when they visit. I know there is something on the menu for everyone, and bonus, they do not add salt to their French fries which is great if you have British friends. Also, their burgers are legendary, especially their Hainesport burger with cheese fries.

Not Just Subs

Fried Fish Po’ Boy

Not Just Subs is our local deli in town. The building was the old Lumberton Post Deli and I remember as a kid going there for their Italian subs on special occasions! Plus, their potato salad was legendary. The store sat vacant for about two decades until Not Just Subs bought it and fixed it up during the pandemic. Now we have a place in town for sandwiches again, and it is such a great feeling!

Arby’s Fish N Cheddar

I did not intend for Arby’s to be my first fish sandwich of the year. I was hoping I’d be able to enjoy a nice, buttery Chick-fil-a fish sandwich. I walk into the restaurant and approach the cashier only to be told that they are not offering it at their location this year. Luckily Arby’s is next door and I just walked over and picked up a fish n cheddar with some curly fries (no tartar sauce). Well here goes nothing!
