In this 2-part series, we’ll be discussing why your church should be on social media. We’ve learned through the past decade that social media is not going anywhere, so we should use it to our advantage. There isn’t an age group that uses it more than others, and research has shown that nearly three-quarters of our population uses some platform on social media. That’s a lot of people to be in touch with.
Millenials and iGens seem to have a bad rep with other generations. People say they are always on their devices. Always posting to their Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and SnapChat, they almost never come up for air. This is one of the reasons as to why your parish should be on a social media platform, to reach out to those who may have question about their faith.
It seems as though many Millenials and iGens identify themselves as spiritual as opposed to being religious. They believe that there is a higher being, but unsure of whom or what it is. They watch videos, read articles and blog about their own thoughts and ideas with spirituality. If your parish happens to be on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, they are more likely to see how the Catholic Church (or other faiths) see their God. This could open up a whole new school of thought for them.
Facebook and Instagram also allow you to post videos, and even live stream to your followers. You can live broadcast your parish’s mass and different holiday events. Even though people may not be sitting in your pews, you are still able to gather their attention and teach them more about your faith. It is still a win win.
Also, don’t forget about posting events on your social media page. It is all about attracting people to events with pictures and information. Sometimes just having a 5k to raise money will help to interest people to see what else you are doing for the community and church.
Keep in mind that not all of the followers are currently Catholic. With your social media page you can attract them towards RCIA. What a great way to help encourage their new faith.
These are just some of the reasons as to why your parish should be on social media. Reaching younger generations, attracting new members of the church through photos and videos and posting events are just the tip of the iceberg.
